The San José Fire Department (SJFD) will launch a new Community Paramedicine pilot on Oct. 1, 2026 to help residents with complex needs who too often cycle between the street, 911, emergency rooms and back again. Mayor Matt Mahan first designated it as a priority during the budget process for Fiscal Year (FY) 2026-27, directing the City Manager to identify funding to launch the pilot and measure its effectiveness. The six-month pilot creates a dedicated Mobile Care Unit within SJFD to follow up with residents whose medical, behavioral health, substance use or social service needs may not be resolved through a traditional 911 response and trip to the emergency room.

New data shows that unsheltered homelessness has fallen 32% in the City of San José in just 18 months, according to an independently verified model developed in partnership with UrbanLogiq. The algorithm uses 15+ different data points, including the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count, to track changes in San José’s unsheltered population more frequently and with higher accuracy.

The City of San José today announced the graduation of a new cohort from its AI Upskilling Program – and unveiled plans to expand the training to over 1,000 employees, or roughly 15% of the city workforce, in 2026. The Bay Area’s largest city will host Super Bowl Opening Night on Monday, Feb. 2, kicking off football’s biggest week at the San José McEnery Convention Center. Opening Night is the NFL’s official kickoff event, featuring all players and coaches from both teams, live entertainment, and fan activities that mark the start of Super Bowl week.
